I grew up in Miami and Miami Beach. I went to college in Colorado where I was making art that was heavily influenced by my Miami background and specifically the Art Deco architecture of Miami Beach. A professor joked that one day I was going to move back to Miami and start painting mountain landscapes. He was partially right, in that I did move back to Miami. This was after I moved to Los Angeles for grad school and remained there for over 30 years, still influenced by both Miami and Los Angeles. When I finally did return to live in Miami Beach, I did not paint those mountain landscapes, but I found myself completely engrossed and somewhat overwhelmed by the South Florida environment, both the natural and the human made.
It is important to me that my work be visually appealing. My work is abstract with many elements and concepts that may not be apparent in an initial viewing, but reveal themselves over time. In my public art pieces, this multilevel approach makes the work accessible to both the casual observer, yet allows those with more extensive art experience the opportunity for deeper involvement. It can also create questions that entice all types of viewers and expand their perceptions of art and how it can reflect the world we live in.
